ETIAS isn’t open yet: spot an apply-now trap before you pay

ETIAS applications are not open as of October 9, 2026. Use this official-site check, EES-versus-ETIAS matrix, and worked family fee example before sharing passport or payment details.

The decision

Do not submit an ETIAS application or pay an ETIAS fee today. On October 9, 2026, the official European Union site says ETIAS is not operating and no applications are being collected. Use the EU page at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias as the status check. If another site promises to file an application now, stop before sharing passport or payment details.

1. What is true today

ETIAS is a future pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals visiting 30 European countries for a short stay. It is not a visa, and it is not the same system as the biometric process travelers now encounter at many external Schengen borders.

The current official ETIAS landing page and FAQ both say the system is not in operation, no applications are being collected, and the EU will announce a specific start date several months before launch. That means an “apply now” button cannot lead to a live ETIAS application today.

The same official material describes the future process so travelers can prepare: applications will be available through the official ETIAS website or official mobile app; the direct fee is planned at €20; and an approved authorization will normally be linked to the passport for up to three years or until that passport expires. Those future details are not evidence that the portal is open now.

2. Do not confuse EES with ETIAS

The Entry/Exit System, or EES, is already operational. The EU says it has been fully operational at external border crossings of participating countries since April 10, 2026. It records short-stay travelers’ passport information, entry and exit data, facial image and fingerprints at the border.

ETIAS is different: once launched, eligible visa-exempt travelers will obtain authorization before travel. EES can therefore explain a real biometric step at passport control without making any commercial ETIAS application page legitimate.

3. Run this 60-second stop-verify-wait check

Stop if a page asks for passport details or payment while the official EU page still says no applications are collected. Do not let a countdown, search advertisement or “limited appointment” message override the live status.

Verify by typing or opening the official EU address yourself. Official EU guidance says EU website addresses use the europa.eu domain. Check the full hostname, not just a page logo or the words “official ETIAS.” A copied EU flag, polished design or search ranking does not establish authority.

Wait when the status is not live. Save the official page in your trip notes and set one check close to your booking decision and another before departure. Do not guess a launch date from an undated blog. If the EU later opens applications, verify the status again before using any link.

This check cannot prove that every non-EU travel business is fraudulent. Authorized intermediaries may operate after ETIAS launches. It answers the narrower and more useful question today: can anyone submit a live ETIAS application now? The official answer is no.

4. Use the official fee to expose an inflated quote

The EU says the future direct application fee will be €20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 will be exempt from that payment. Commercial intermediaries may add their own service charge, so a higher price is not the official fee.

Here is a completed hypothetical example for two adults aged 42 and 40 and one child aged 16. If ETIAS were live and all three needed authorization, the direct EU application-fee total would be €40: €20 + €20 + €0. A commercial page quoting €79 for each traveler would total €237, which is €197 above that future direct-fee example.

TravelerFuture direct EU fee€79 intermediary quoteDifference
Adult, 42€20€79€59
Adult, 40€20€79€59
Child, 16€0€79€79
Household total€40€237€197

This is a fee comparison, not a current application estimate. Because ETIAS is not accepting applications today, the correct amount to pay for a live ETIAS application now is zero. The calculation becomes useful only after the official launch status changes.

5. Decide what to share—and what not to share

An ETIAS application will eventually require passport and personal information. That makes “pre-registration” costly even if the seller never charges a large fee. The EU’s abuse guidance warns about intermediaries that falsely imply they are the official channel, charge unreasonable prices, misuse personal or financial information, or fail to submit correctly and on time.

Before launch, do not send a passport scan, card number, date of birth, home address or account login to a page claiming it will complete ETIAS now. If you already entered data, preserve the page address and transaction record, contact your card provider about an unrecognized or misleading charge, and follow the relevant national identity-theft or cybercrime reporting guidance. Do not upload more documents to “complete” or “refund” the transaction until the recipient has been independently verified.

After launch, direct application through the official EU channel minimizes intermediary cost and keeps the transaction within the official process. If you intentionally use an intermediary, retain the signed authorization, total fee, privacy terms, confirmation email and unique application number in your own email account.

6. Put this completed trip note in your itinerary

ETIAS status check — Europe trip

Checked: October 9, 2026. Official source: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Status: ETIAS not operating; applications not collected; no action required today. EES is separate and already active at participating external borders. Next action: re-open the official page before paying for any authorization and again before departure. Do not use a commercial apply-now link while the official status remains closed.

Replace the checked date when you repeat the review; do not merely copy the word “closed.” If the official status changes, record the new start date, the passport used for the application and the confirmation email. A dated note prevents an old memory or an old article from becoming your travel rule.

7. The rule to remember

Border biometrics now do not mean ETIAS applications are open. Future application instructions do not mean you can apply today. One official status page resolves both confusions.

Until that page changes, the safest workflow is simple: keep planning the trip, expect EES at the border if it applies to you, and pay no ETIAS application fee. When the EU announces launch, return to the official site directly rather than following an old bookmark, advertisement or forwarded message.
